Suehisa Kuroda, Tomoaki Nishihara and Yuji Takenoshita are now planning a short trip to the Central African Republic. Ndoki camp in the Congo, which borders on the C.A.R., remains inaccessible to researchers; in the meantime they intend to carry out an ecological survey of sympatric populations of chimpanzees and lowland gorillas in Dzanga-Sangha National Park. There they hope to gain insight into some of the ecological factors which may cause regional differences in ape populations, such as those observed at Ndoki. Kuroda says that his team is committed to continuing work in Congo as soon as the political situation improves, and also anticipates the future reopening of the bonobo study camp at Wamba in Zaire. The team of researchers will leave Japan on March 5, 1994, with an expected return by mid-April to early May.
